MK Secondary Chemistry Students Book 2

This book aims at fuly covering the requirements of the National Curriculum Development Centre syllabus Senior 2 for Chemistry. This book will in some measure serve, as a bridge between the work for Senior 1 and Senior 3.

While our approach follows conventional and well-tried lines, a special attempt has been made to indicate the significance of recent developments and to give an adequate treatment of the topics.

Chemistry is a branch of Physical Science that deals with the composition and transformation of matter In this book, you will learn about reactions of metals with oxygen, water, hydrogen, atomic structures, the periodic table, ions and ionic compounds, chemical features, Bonding, Chemical equations, acids, bases, and indicators, salts and the effect of electricity on substances.

The topics treated will give Senior 2 students knowledge that will help them interpret arranging metals in order ot their reactivity, state the properties of water, prepare hydrogen and state ifs properties, describe the structure of an atom and write the electron configuration, locate the positions of the ditterent elements in the periodic table, predict the type of ion formed from the electron arrangement of the element, explain the reactions of the chemical families in terms of their electron arrangement, differentiate between electrovalent, covalent, dative, and metallic bonding, write balanced equations, differentiate between acids and bases by use of indicators and outline the applications of acid base neutralisation reactions, prepare simple salts using appropriate methods and recognise that electrolysis is a means of obtaining elements from chemical compounds. Antacid tablets have also been discussed so that you can help the societyout there about some of the challenges they meet when they have eaten certain foods.

This book has experiments, learners' activities and notes. You are encouraged to discover the answers to most of the subject content by doing the experimental activities. Practice makes perfect. The activities are designed to enable students learn chemistry concepts thus enhancing learning. The experiments are for the teacher to conduct while activities must be done by the learners.

Through doing experiments you will acquire the following skills: observation, drawing conclusions, critical thinking, handling apparatus, interpreting symbols, formulae, and chemical equations.

The knowledge you learn in Senior 2 will make you a useful person in society in the following ways: environmental protection and promotion of development of the society you live in. The basic chemistry knowledge you acquire in Senior 2 should also be able fo support you in Senior 3 as you prepare to get into higher education and eventually professional training.

Revision questions and exercises are given throughout the book for your practice. Work through them either as an individual or as a group and cross check your answers with those provided at the end of the book. These questions should be used by you the learner tor self assessment. Where you are not sure, consult the teacher.

Make Secondary Chemistry for Uganda your companion book and take care of it. The main focus in this book is you, the student. Without this book you may not be in a position to do class work.

Note to the teachers and learners.

Much as most of the illustrations used in this book are in three dimensions, the learner is not expected to reproduce them as they are when answering questions.

The aim of using three dimensional illustrations is to help the learners understand and appreciate the concepts of Chemistry easily since the three dimensional illustrations depict a real life/experimental situation.

However the teacher is expected to use two dimensional diagrams when teaching on the blackboard and these are the ones expected to be used by the students when answering examination questions.
