VISION PUBLISHING LOWER SECONDARY GEOGRAPHY LEARNER'S BOOK 1

Geography is about nature and how human beings interact with it. The world population grows rapidly every year, yet the world's resources remain finite. This brings in dynamics of soil degradation and conservation, global warming, and climate change, diminishing water resources, and conservation of flora and fauna into play. As a subject of study, Geography plays a critical role in educating the world to work towards sustainable use of the natural resources.

This New Vision Geography Book One is an interactive learner-centred textbook that was specially written to empower the learner not to merely acquire knowledge of Geography for its own sake, but to exploit that knowledge and awareness to contribute towards sustainable use of our scarce resources. The learner will ask questions, observe his or her surroundings, consider alternatives, evaluate, and analyse evidence to come up with tangible outputs/products or solutions to solve real-life environmental problems in his or her community and beyond.

Throughout the textbook, there are opportunities for learner inquiry and discovery through participating in group discussions, excursions and field trips, debates, research, and projects, where the learner explores specific problems in his or her community and proposes solutions. The learner shall also acquire transferable skills of observation, data collection, analysis and interpretation, which shall help him or her to do well in other subjects.

Generic skills, essential life skills and values, as well as appreciation of other cross-cutting issues, have also been considered. Overall, our aim is that studying Geography shall transform the learner into a model citizen, and an agent of change who will mobilise people in his or her community and beyond, to fight climate change, through sensitising people about sustainable ways of exploiting the scarce natural resources.
