Echoes Across the Valley comprises poems from East Africa. It portrays the changing trends in poetry from Africa in general and East Africa in particular. Not since the publication of Poems From East Africa (1971) has such an anthology been produced featuring a rich diversity and newness of contribution. Most of the poems in this anthology have been composed in the past decade and therefore make this collection among the first anthologies to capture the socio-political mood and dynamics at the dusk of the twentieth century. The collection carries the reader across the valleys of time and space, gender and sex, race and tribe, and class bigotry.
The editors of this collection, Arthur I. Luvai and Kwamchetsi Makokha, are ardent poets. Luvai has been instrumental in the promotion of poetry teaching. He has taught the subject for many years, including at the University of Nairobi and Maseno University College, where he is a Professor of Literature. Makokha studied Literature at the University of Nairobi. He is an expert of theatre arts, a literary commentator and a media practitioner.
