Carcase for Hounds is a novel by Kenyan writer Meja Mwangi that was released in 1974. The novel is about the Mau Mau freedom struggle during the final years of British colonial rule, and it uses the acts of the major characters to demonstrate how Mau Mau was organized and why it took so long for the colonial administration to defeat them. Carcase for Hounds has garnered mixed reviews. Ola Balogun adapted the novel into a movie, Cry Freedom (1981), which is not to be confused with the more renowned 1987 film of the same name.
The story depicts the fight between the fictional General Haraka, a Mau Mau leader, and British forces representing the colonial administration, led by Captain Kingsley. Haraka is the former village head, and his quarrel with Kingsley before the conflict leads him to consider rising against the British.
It is set mostly in rural areas of Kenya, with battle taking place in rain forests and mountains.
