An African village called Kayunga, in a country called Sahara, is suffering an epidemic of snakes killing people and livestock. Chiefs, and elders mobilise the villagers to fight the snakes. When the British News Network (BNN) reports this story, musicians and missionaries outside of Africa are moved to aid Kayunga under the banner Saving Sahara. By the end of the epidemic, the aid has changed the lives of most people in Kayunga, especially the leaders. They can afford shoes for their children; they have built new houses and taken on new wives. They even have a hospital. It was a good epidemic!

Apprenticed as a journalist/sub-editor at The Independent magazine in 2007 2008, Yusuf Serunkuma worked as editor with Fountain Publishers. In 2012, he joined Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) as a Graduate Fellow. Serunkuma is author of "The Naked Excellencies", a satirical short story appearing in Butterfly Dreams and Other New Short Stories from Uganda.

"Snakes is simultaneously a laugh out loud comedy and a searing exposition of the peculiar culture of the great white helpers. The play reveals what the white helpers have not noticed: the subaltern does speak and s/he is hilariously clever. Serunkuma is a strong gentle voice contributing both literature and political commentary."
