In preparing this book, we have been greatly influenced by Uganda Notional Examinations Board (UNEB) syllabus and the new Curriculum developed by the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) and approved by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

An attempt has been made to state principles briefly and concisely. Apart fromn being used as a textbook for UCE students, it is hoped that it will serve as a reference for specialists and the interested workers in related fields, who need to be familiar with background work and theory.

Text questions are suggested at the end of each chapter. The questions are asked to reinforce the student's understanding of the facts, principles and procedures involved.

We have not included many questions demanding purely descriptive answers, on the ground that such questions can be set by individual teachers. Wherever possible, illustrations have been given in form of maps, tables, graphs, photographs, diagrams and drawings.

Students are encouraged to carry out the activities in this book and develop geography related concepts and ideas.
