The Nile English Course Learner's Book 6 (LACE)

Reading comprehension has been identified as one of the biggest challenges in language instruction in Uganda. And considering the critical role the reading skills play in learning, it is essential that such a shortcoming is immediately addressed. This is why NCDC with support from the Ministry of Education and Sports has revised The Nile English Course: Learner's Aid to Comprehension Efficiency (LACE), as a supplementary reading textbook to address the reading comprehension challenges.

LACE, Learner's Book 6 will be used concurrently with The Nile English Course, Book 6. The aim of LACE is to support learners in carrying out extensive and remedial reading. This will help them to develop their reading and comprehension skills in English besides critical thinking and problem- solving skills. LACE provides short easy-to-read story texts and numerous spot-on language exercises which learners can do on their own or in small groups and pairs. Answers to the exercises are provided at the end of the book to enable the learner do self-checks.

It is hoped that the learners will be helped to scale up their literacy levels, thus becoming proficient in using English for effective communication. I, therefore, recommend the revised The Nile English Course and LACE for use in all primary schools in
