Fountain Progressive English for Secondary Schools is designed to prepare students for the Certificate of Education examinations. The course takes into account the unique requirements and interests of the students.
The course uses the thematic approach. This means that each of the units is centred on a single theme. At the end of every eight units is either a consolidation exercise or a set of such exercises. The exercises are intended to help the students consolidate their grasp of what they have learnt in the previous eight units.
The books cater for all the four language skills in an integrated way. They are structured in such a way that the student will proceed from 'Speechwork' to 'Reading' through 'Language Focus' to 'Writing'.
Key features of the course include:
- Stimulating communication activities.
- Varied topics dealing with issues that are both relevant and enlightening.
- Authentic reading texts from a broad range of sources, from which it is easy to fashion practical exercises.
- Systematic coverage of grammar.
- Systematic treatment of the four language skills, i.e. speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- Checklists relating to specific language points.
- Consolidation exercises to help reinforce a student's grasp of language skills.
The phonetic symbols used in the course are based on the International Phonetic System.
