VISION PUBLISHING LOWER SECONDARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IN ENGLISH LEARNER'S BOOK 1

The aspiration to become a competent communicator is a universal quest. As a language, English facilitates communication. We use language to convey our feelings, thoughts, and ideas to others. English is known as the global language. It is the official language of communication and business transaction in Uganda, as well as, the language of instruction at the secondary level of education.

Literature in English cultivates the learner's literary skills of comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, application, and organisation, which can be used in other disciplines. It also prepares the learner to develop inquiry and critical thinking skills.

This New Vision English Language and Literature in English Book One is an active learner-centred textbook that puts the learning interests of the learner at the core. It was purposely written to empower the learner to effortlessly and fluently use English language to become an effective communicator. Owing to the shift from the knowledge-based curriculum to a competence and skills- based one, the learner shall throughout this textbook carry out intensive and extensive listening, speaking, reading, and writing, thereby, developing skills of self-expression, analysis and interpretation. This textbook will open the world to the learner, expose him/her to different cultures; ignite and inspire their creativity, that will catalyse the learner's competitiveness in this 21st century global value chain.

The textbook will also lay a strong foundation for the learner to do well in other subjects in secondary school and beyond.

Generic skills, essential life skills and values, as well as appreciation of other crosscutting issues, have been considered to help produce a well-rounded and patriotic individual, who appreciates their duty in contributing towards a better Uganda.
